Our facial expressions help us communicate and share our feelings, but they also leave lines and wrinkles on the face. These lines and wrinkles around the eyes, between the eyebrows, and on the forehead can make a person look older or even give the appearance of a permanent frown. Botox® can silence and relax the muscles that cause these expression lines, letting the lines and wrinkles become smooth.
How Does Botox® Work?
Botox® treats dynamic wrinkles, or wrinkles caused by repetitive muscle movements. When we smile or frown, our facial muscles pull the skin into the same position over and over, creating a crease. Botox® works on the nerves that tell the facial muscles what to do. By targeting specific facial muscles, Botox® silences the signals from the nerves. Without signals telling them to contract, the muscles relax, and so do the wrinkles.
Botox® treats crow’s feet around the eyes, lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines), and forehead lines. These areas of dynamic wrinkles respond well to Botox®, and people can see a significant reduction in wrinkles after receiving Botox®.
How is Botox® Administered?
Your injection specialist will inject Botox® into the area to be treated. According to the manufacturer, crow’s feet will require three injection sites, while glabellar and forehead lines will require five injection sites. The injections may feel like a pinch, but for people who have trouble with needles, Derma-Tech can provide numbing with ice or a numbing cream to make you more comfortable during the process.
How Is Botox® Different From Dysport® and Xeomin®?
Botox® differs from Dysport® and Xeomin® in several small but important ways. All three contain the same ingredient, botulinum toxin. However, Xeomin® uses a pure, isolated version of the toxin, while Dysport® and Botox® use a version that also contains other proteins that do not affect treatment. All three are very safe and effective, but one may work better for an individual than the others, depending on their response.
Only Botox® has FDA approval to treat crow’s feet, glabellar lines, and forehead lines. Dysport® contains a more flexible formula approved for use on glabellar lines. All three use the same botulinum toxin and have the same effect on nerves and muscles.
What Results Will I See From Botox®?
You will see results from Botox® in about three or eight days, although full results can take two weeks.. Once fully developed, you can expect your results to last about three to four months.
You will see wrinkles begin to smooth out within a few days of your injections, leaving the treated areas looking relaxed and softened. The neurotoxin in Botox® has no permanent effects on muscles or nerves, so when the treatment wears off, all systems return to normal.
