Spider veins are a bothersome condition that can affect both men and women. Traditionally, the dark, web-like veins occur throughout the thighs, buttocks, and legs but can also appear on the face. In most cases, spider veins are not harmful and are removed solely for cosmetic reasons. However, if spider or varicose veins become painful, they may need to be removed for medical purposes.
At Derma-Tech Medical Spa, our treatment of choice for spider veins or small varicose veins is sclerotherapy. The unique procedure has been around for decades and has helped countless men and women achieve smoother, clearer skin.
How Does Sclerotherapy Work?
During treatment, a specialized sclerosing solution is injected directly into the offending vein. Unwanted veins are forced to break down and scar which effectively reroutes blood flow to healthier veins. Over time, the damaged veins collapse and are reabsorbed into the body.
Sclerotherapy is done in-office, and the procedure itself takes just a few short minutes. Patients who aren’t fond of needles can opt for a topical anesthetic to keep them comfortable throughout treatment. There is minimal downtime after treatment. You’ll likely be able to return to most normal activities immediately with few restrictions.
What Results Can You Expect?
Results from sclerotherapy are gradual and progressive. Most patients will start to see initial results in about 2-3 weeks as unwanted veins are naturally reabsorbed via the metabolic process. An optimal outcome can take 1+ month for smaller veins and upwards of 3-4 months for larger veins.
Veins that have responded to sclerotherapy typically do not come back. However, the procedure cannot prevent future veins from forming. While the majority of patients are happy with the long-term results of their procedure, others may need touch-up treatments as new veins become prominent.
How Many Treatments Will You Need?
Every patient is unique. Although possible, most patients do not see optimal results with only one treatment. Your skincare specialist will schedule a follow-up visit about 4=6 weeks after your initial treatment to assess how well you are responding. In most cases, a series of treatments may be necessary to give you the results you want.
